15 Hiking Trails in Sacramento

July 11, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Sacramento

Sacramento, California is the state’s capital and largest city, serving a population of between 500,000 and 2.5 million. Attractive characteristics of the Sacramento area include a low cost of living, a skilled labor force, access to government and education, and quality of life. Visitors can experience the diversity of cultures in the city through its many festivals, museums, and other attractions. The Sacramento area has many cultural and outdoor activities for everyone, including hiking and mountain biking trails.

For outdoor recreation, take a hike along the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. This 1.1-mile trail features oak woodlands, historical relics from the Gold Rush, and wildlife-rich marshes. It features interpretive signs that explain what you can see along the trail. The trail is also a great place to observe wildlife, including river otters, which live in this area. Afterwards, check out the many historic sites, including the old Sacramento jail, to see the city’s rich history.

For those seeking a little more adventure, the Cosumnes River Preserve is a beautiful 30-minute drive south of Sacramento. This designated wildlife habitat features over 250 species of birds. Visitors to the Cosumnes River Preserve can enjoy a walk through this scenic riverside area with their dogs, who will enjoy splashing around in the shallow parts of the river. After a day of sightseeing, take a swim in the cool, refreshing water.

If you prefer hiking, the American River Parkway Trail traverses the entire length of the parkway and ends at Folsom Lake. You can also visit the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains for a day of hiking. A few miles north of downtown Sacramento, the Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park is the perfect place for families to enjoy a full day of outdoor activities. You can also visit Auburn State Recreation Area and Folsom Lake. The best part is, they are within easy reach.

The area around Sacramento is rich in hiking opportunities. Most trails in the area are fairly flat, but there are a few moderate to challenging options. You can also opt for a longer hike in the Lake Natoma region, which is slightly more challenging. You can also hike in the Auburn State Recreation Area, which is around Foresthill Bridge. The Auburn State Recreation Area features several challenging and intermediate trails, and spectacular views of foothill gorges, rivers, and waterfalls.

One of the best hikes near Sacramento is the Auburn Hiking Trail, which features a waterfall and swimming opportunities. There are less steep sections, but be careful – the trail may have poison ivy. If you love hiking, Sacramento has many great places to choose from, no matter what your fitness level is. The city is bursting with cultural events, and its unique charm is attracting new residents each day. Just a short drive away, you can get your fill of outdoor activities and enjoy the California sun and scenery.
