15 Hiking Trails in Seward Alaska

July 5, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Seward Alaska

If you’re planning a visit to Seward Alaska, you should consider visiting between May and September. The cold and fewer daylight hours in winter make the weather in Seward difficult to enjoy, and many businesses close. But by mid-May, most businesses are open and operating. Additionally, Seward has an early summer with less rain than the second half of the year. However, be prepared for rain any time of year. Here are some tips for visiting Seward during these months:

Mount Marathon Hiker’s Trail – Although not the longest hike in Seward, this trail offers breathtaking views of Resurrection Bay. The name comes from the marathon races that trail runners hold there. These trail runners race up to the top and back down the mountain, climbing nearly three thousand feet in a single day. While the mountain is steep, most hikers can conquer the 6-mile round-trip trail on foot. The trail has many plateaus to allow for easy walking and climbing.

Exit Glacier – This ice-covered glacier is a short drive from Seward. It is part of the Kenai Fjords National Park, and features spectacular views. Hikers will appreciate the crackling ice and blue glaciers at Exit Glacier. If you are a beginner, you can opt for a shorter hike that won’t require much physical fitness. You can even take lessons to become an ice climber or learn more about ice climbing.

Resurrect Art Coffee House – In addition to serving good coffee, this café also offers pastries. If you want a quick bite to eat, you can try the food truck Side Street Locals, which offers sandwiches that are creative and delicious. Its menu includes Alaska Reindeer sausage. It also offers reubens. You can try Texas-style barbecue at Firebrand BBQ, which has covered outdoor seating. The meat is tender and the sauce is tasty. There are also breakfast burritos.

Another option is taking a train from Anchorage to Seward. It’s a 130-mile drive from Anchorage. Allow yourself at least two to three hours for the journey. You’ll enjoy the views, but you’ll have less stress. The railroad also offers a shuttle to Exit Glacier, which is ten miles away from town. A few things to keep in mind before traveling to Seward include:

A classic Alaskan town, Seward offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. It’s also the start of the historic Iditarod Trail. Early Iditarod sled teams plied the trail from Seward to Nome in the winter to carry mail and supplies. Those who came later could use this route to access the town and its many attractions. Afterward, travelers can enjoy a cup of coffee and local art in a cozy cafe.

Hikers can also enjoy the waterfront. The Caines Head Trail is a 14-mile-long trail that spans Resurrection Bay. The trail is paved and easy to navigate. Bike and leashed dogs are welcome on this hike. The trail also passes the campgrounds and the town of Seward. At the end of the trail, you’ll find yourself in downtown Seward and the Alaska SeaLife Center. However, wheelchair users must be careful as there is a steep portion that requires caution.
