15 Hiking Trails in Socorro New Mexico

July 1, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Socorro New Mexico

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Socorro New Mexico, look no further. Socorro is a picturesque, historic town located on the Rio Grande and Magdalena Mountains. It’s also close to the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge and Socorro Nature Area. If you’re traveling by car, you can easily drive to Socorro and enjoy its many attractions. If you’re bringing your family, you can stay at a nearby Red Roof Inn. It offers free Wi-Fi, parking, and a continental breakfast.

A popular hiking and camping area is Box Canyon, located about five miles west of Socorro off US 60. The City of Socorro Parks and Recreation department provides leisure activities for all ages. There are also a variety of activities for a family outing, including hiking the El Camino Royal de Tierra Adentro, a historic trail that threaded across northern Mexico from Zacatecas to the interior. Another popular destination is Gordy’s Hill Off-Highway Vehicle Area, which offers a variety of off-road vehicle riding opportunities. In addition to these attractions, there are several wildlife management areas in the area, including the Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex, which has four conservation areas in Socorro and Valencia counties.

The NMVFO is comprised of volunteers who are interested in helping to protect the environment and preserve the area. These volunteers come from various backgrounds, including retired teachers, librarians, and business owners. And while each volunteer has unique talents, they all share a commitment to the community. In addition to volunteering with NMVFO, volunteers are also required to take a wilderness first-aid course every year. They need all the help they can get, as volunteers, to preserve the area.

The town has a rich history. Spanish Conquistadores carved mysterious crosses into the rock and made their way through the area. The town lies on a plateau at the Continental Divide and the watershed on the eastern side flows into the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. For this reason, you might want to plan a trip to Socorro in June or July to catch the summer monsoon. There, you can explore the ruins of ancient cultures.

There is an excellent trail in Socorro New Mexico that stretches 3,100 miles from Canada. Its southern terminus is the Crazy Cook Monument. Hiking on the trail requires a Recreational Access Permit. And you need a four-wheel drive vehicle to access the wilderness. The trails can be challenging but they are well worth the trip. While exploring Socorro, don’t forget to stop for a snack. Socorro is a town of friendly people.

The Valles Caldera volcano erupted over one million years ago. The ash spread across the Western United States, and the first inhabitants of this area broke it up and used it to build their homes. The area is home to the Jemez Mountains, which are the southernmost tip of the Rocky Mountains. The area includes three counties and is home to the largest National Park Service Civilian Conservation Corps National Landmark District in the country.
