15 Hiking Trails in St. Augustine Florida

July 5, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| St. Augustine Florida

If you love history, St. Augustine Florida should be on your travel bucket list. The oldest city in the United States was founded in 1565 by Spanish miners, who then transported the stone to the town. The city is also home to the Fort Matanzas National Monument, one of the country’s oldest forts. This monument tells the story of Florida’s history. It was originally a fort that was used to house the military and was eventually converted into a city.

While you’re in St. Augustine, Florida, be sure to check out Diane’s Natural Market & Cafe. You can visit the cafe and purchase organic fruits and vegetables. You can also find health products at the store. If you’re interested in learning more about nature photography, check out the Florida Birding & Photo Fest. The festival attracts 600 people every year and caters to both amateur and professional nature photographers. Those who want to learn more about nature photography will find a lot to learn from the educational workshops and seminars offered during the festival.

In the past, St. Augustine was the most important city in the South Eastern part of the United States. Spanish settlers chose the location because it was easily defended and had abundant fresh water. The city is a fascinating mix of cultures and is one of Florida’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its compact Ancient City, surrounded by thick coquina walls, is very walkable. The city has a diverse history, ranging from the early Native American settlers to the Spanish and British.

Walking through St. Augustine’s historical district offers a variety of opportunities for recreation. The city offers dozens of walking trails in historic colonial forts and conservation areas. You can also enjoy the scenic scenery while getting some exercise. The historic architecture of the city is complemented by beautiful wetlands and pristine forests. Whether you’re looking for some adventure or are just interested in learning more about the city’s past, you’re sure to find something to keep you busy.

There are also two conservation areas located in the city. The Bayard Conservation Area has an interconnected trail network of 10 miles. You’ll see shady forest areas and sun-drenched wetlands and hundreds of species of birds. There’s also a backcountry camping site at Moses Creek Conservation Area. If you’re looking for something more secluded, try the Three Quarters of the Twelve Mile Swamp between Nocatee and St. Augustine.

While strolling through the historic district, make sure to visit the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse. The school house was the first co-ed school in the United States. It was originally a one-room building, made of cedar and cypress wood. The schoolmaster later married, and the building was converted into a school. The building now holds 160 wax figures. The building has a detention cupboard, which gives it a distinctly Harry Potter vibe.
