15 Hiking Trails in Washington Georgia

Located in Wilkes County, Georgia, Washington Georgia was the first town in America to be chartered in the name of General George Washingon. The settlement was approved in 1780 and within a few years a hundred acres of land were sold and purchased. The settlement included a church and school. The town thrived and became a stagecoach stop before it was eventually connected to the railroad in 1847. Today, Washington is home to over 100 antebellum homes.

High Falls State Park is a scenic 528-acre park that was purchased by the state in 1825. Located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, this park offers great fishing in two stocked lakes and is a scenic recreational area. The park is home to seven earthen mounds that were constructed between 250 and 950 A.D. The park is also home to several fascinating animals. Aside from fishing, High Falls State Park is a historic archaeological site, which includes 7 earthen mounds that date back to the time of the early Hooper civilization.

For a unique way to learn more about history, you can visit the city’s Kettle Creek Battlefield. Located just outside Washington, DC, this historic site was purchased by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1900 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The grounds include a picnic area, woodland trails, interpretive signs, and new burial sites. Whether you choose to view the battlefields or learn about the region’s colonial past, you’ll be sure to find something worth visiting in Washington.

You can spend a full day exploring historic sites in the area. The State’s historic sites include the Govenor Mansion and Martin Luther King Historic Site. Other cities with interesting history include the historic towns of Smyrna, Springfield, and Statesboro. You can also visit the Historic High Country, which contains many museums, parks, festivals, and historical sites. The town’s beautiful beaches and historical buildings will help you unwind after a long day.

Some other great attractions are the Burnt Mountain Overlook, the Pickens County Senior Center, and the Nathan Dean Sports Complex. For outdoor enthusiasts, there’s Lake Oconee, which includes a boat ramp and fishing. The state’s national forests offer hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, and rivers. Regardless of your level of adventure, you can find something exciting in this Georgia town. You can even visit a national historic park site to see what it’s like to live in the early 19th century.

For those who enjoy shopping, the Northwest Georgia Mountains offer several major stores and department stores. Some of the more notable stores include JCPenney, Belk, and Sears. You can also find specialty stores, like Anna’s Place and Classic Jewelry, along with numerous other boutiques. For families, the state’s numerous parks and outdoor activities ensure you’ll never be bored in this town.
