Hiking is a popular way to experience Yosemite National Park. Many hikers begin their journey in the valley and climb the peak. A classic long-distance backpacking trail, the John Muir Trail stretches 211 miles between Yosemite National Park and Mount Whitney. You can hike part of it if you’d like. However, section-hikers must compete with through-hikers for permits. Only 45 exit permits are issued each day over Donahue Pass.
