The Bozeman Academy was established in 1872 in the Good Templars’ hall, which is now the Episcopal church. The same year, Miss Gertrude Crittenden began the Gallatin Valley Female Seminary in Bozeman. Later, the seminary was transferred to Hamilton. In addition, the Holy Rosary Catholic Church has a school in Bozeman. The school has pupils of all grades and also offers a musical course and a specially-prepared Sister as a teacher.
In 1867, the Crow tribe gathered at Fort Laramie to sign a treaty with the government. Then, a war party made its way from the vicinity of Fort C.F. Smith. This party was comprised of five Piegan Indians. One of them, the Mountain Chief, had three sons. Despite this, the settlers were able to sustain themselves. In the years following, the settlers continued to send provisions to other parts of the state. They never had to worry about going hungry.
