Visit Sutter Creek and experience its rich history. The historic Main Street is lined with 19th-century buildings built by early prospectors. Visit the water-powered Knight Foundry, which opened in 1873. Dine at Sina’s Backroads Cafe and try their sourdough-style bread. If you have time, you can visit the winery’s restaurant to sample some of the many award-winning wines.

Take a trip to Gold Country, California to experience history, farming, and wine-making. This off-the-beaten-path destination is within striking distance of Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. You can take in the sights and sounds of old mining towns, explore farm-to-table cuisine, and enjoy a thriving wine and beer scene. For a memorable trip, consider visiting Gold Country in the fall. Foliage colors will change, and you can hike to the base of the Sierra Nevada.

Murphys is another town that was once known as the Queen of the Southern Mines. The town’s Main Street is lined with antique shops and galleries and transports visitors back to the 18th century. It’s also home to fine 21st-century dining, including Rob’s Place where you can dine on a rib-eye steak. Alternatively, if you’d rather enjoy pescetarian fare, there’s Grounds Restaurant, which serves authentic Indian food.

The Sierra foothills provide a spectacular backdrop for your trip to Gold Country California. Grass Valley and Nevada City are gold-mining towns. Visit museums that teach about mining techniques and feature historical memorabilia and equipment. And don’t forget to try gold panning in one of the many rivers in the region! This traditional method of gold-hunting has survived the test of time and has become a popular recreational activity.

Sutter Creek, 45 miles southeast of Sacramento, is home to the “Jewel of the Mother Lode” and is known as the “Jewel of the Mother Lode. Sutter Creek was named after John Sutter, who had co-owned Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered in the early 1850s. In the same year, Alvinza Hayward struck it rich. The town became one of the first Gold Rush towns in 1854.
