15 Reasons to Travel to Jacksonville and Medford Oregon

May 2, 2022 | More: Jacksonville and Medford Oregon| Why Travel to

If you’re planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest, you may be wondering which Oregon town to choose. Jacksonville and Medford both offer interesting attractions. Both have a rich history, and are located just fifteen miles apart. Jacksonville is a quaint gold rush town filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, and wineries. There are also many hiking trails throughout the town. The area is also the gateway to the Applegate Valley Wine Trail.

Both Jacksonville and Medford have historic significance. Jacksonville had the first Chinatown in Oregon, established in 1850 by Chinese immigrants from San Francisco. In March 2004, archaeological evidence of Jacksonville’s first Chinatown was found in road work excavations. The construction of a new road was halted while archeologists conducted four days of rescue excavations. The archeologists uncovered artifacts such as Chinese bowls, hand-made bottles, opium paraphernalia, and coins.

The Rogue River Valley Railway linked Jacksonville with Medford, Oregon. The Southern Oregon Traction Co. also served the two cities. The book contains many historical details about the railroad, as well as photographs. The images are included in documentation for a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a program of the National Park Service. The Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (OSHP) and the University of Oregon Libraries provide these images for non-commercial use. In the event of a commercial use, please give appropriate credit to the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office.

The distance between Medford and Jacksonville is 99 miles, or 2 hours. The journey time includes time at the gate and in the airport. There is also a bus connecting Medford to Jacksonville that operates twice per day. It costs $2 to ride the bus from Medford to Jacksonville. There are 76 buses per day, but schedules may be different during holidays and weekends. If you need to get to Jacksonville in less than two hours, consider taking the train.
