The town is famous for being home to the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project began in 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. While the project was initially named Manhattan Project, Los Alamos was chosen because it is close to J. Robert Oppenheimer’s home in Albuquerque. The Los Alamos nuclear project is also known as Site Y. The town’s history is rich in military and scientific history.
