15 Reasons to Travel to Ontario Oregon

June 9, 2022 | More: Ontario Oregon| Why Travel to

If you’re looking for a quiet getaway from the big cities, consider visiting the laid-back town of Ontario Oregon. This small community is known for its authentic residents and history. It’s located in the heart of the Western Treasure Valley, with a population of 60,000 in the daytime and approximately 11,000 at night. You’ll have a great time learning about its rich history while having an enjoyable day in this charming little town.

The town was established in 1883 and was named after James Virtue’s home province of Ontario in Canada. In the 1840s, the city became eligible for free land for married settlers. Today, it is a thriving multicultural community. Its history dates back to the 1830s, when immigrants began settling in the area. Its motto, “Where Oregon Begins,” reflects the town’s history as a center of migration.

When the Oregon Short Line Railroad completed its tracks in 1884, Ontario began to grow. Soon, it added passenger and freight service to its offerings. In addition, cattle ranchers from Eastern Oregon began sending their stock to Ontario’s stockyard for transshipment to markets in the Pacific Northwest. As a result, Ontario soon became one of the largest stockyards in the West. The railroad also helped Ontario’s burgeoning agricultural industry. The town’s stockyards were the largest on the Short Line, with daily values of up to $25,000 and $74600 in 1899.

Located 17 miles from Ontario, the city of Vale is a quaint, close-knit community. The largest employer in Vale is the Bureau of Land Management, but agriculture is the primary source of livelihood in Nyssa. This town of 3,188 people is centered on agriculture, with crops such as potatoes and sugar beets. Its residents are also active in the area’s Native American communities, with several pow-wows held annually in honour of their heritage.

While recreational marijuana use has been legal in Oregon, it is still illegal in Idaho, making the state border region a major challenge for the city. Although marijuana remains illegal in Idaho, residents are driving across the state line to buy it, and the result is intense traffic and impacts health services, infrastructure, and public safety. On average, nine cannabis shops operate in Ontario, and the city’s tax revenue from this industry is expected to reach $130 million annually, which is roughly ten percent of the total sales in the state of Oregon by 2020.

For a relaxing trip to Ontario, consider booking a hotel at the Four Rivers Cultural Center. Named for the four rivers that flow through the western Treasure Valley, this museum exhibits the region’s rich cultural heritage. It also includes a cafe, conference center, and theater. Visitors will be impressed with the pioneer spirit that is evident in the museum’s decor. A visit to the museum in Ontario is a great way to experience the pioneer spirit in the city.
