15 Reasons to Travel to Port Townsend Washington

June 9, 2022 | More: Port Townsend Washington| Why Travel to

If you’re planning a vacation in the Pacific Northwest, you might consider visiting Port Townsend Washington. The charming town is close to Seattle and Olympic National Park. This seafaring town has many attractions, including several wineries, breweries, and cideries. While you’re there, you should also visit the city’s art galleries and shops. There are many ways to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Port Townsend, Washington.

As an example of its collaborative culture, Port Townsend supports local farmers and artisans. You can work from home or visit the Co-Lab working space, an office-sharing cooperative. The Co-Lab model has helped the town to create many start-up businesses. Also, you’ll find beautiful buildings such as the historic Port Townsend Castle. Unlike many other historical buildings, the port town’s historic building is home to the US Navy’s primary munitions-handling dock.

A historic Victorian seaport, Port Townsend is a charming, scenic retreat only two hours away from Seattle. It is located on the Olympic Peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides and is a convenient forty-mile drive from the larger city. Because of its rain-shadow position, Port Townsend enjoys a drier climate than Seattle. Visitors will also find it an inspiring place to work on creative economic solutions and community development.

Historic Victorian architecture and quaint waterfront buildings are two of the main draws to this seaport. This city is one of only three Victorian seaports on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown district is lined with Victorian-style buildings and dates back to the nineteenth century. The Fort Worden Historical State Park is also nearby. With such a rich cultural history, it’s no wonder Port Townsend is a great destination for a vacation.

If you’re looking for something more indoors, there are many museums, aquariums, and more. The Port Townsend Marine Science Center offers interactive exhibits for families to learn more about the marine world. The museum also features a skeleton of an orca whale, one of only six in the world. The museum is open from March to October. The museum is located in Fort Worden State Park and is open from March to October.

If you’re a history buff, you can tour the Fort Worden Recreation Area’s trails, which include the abandoned batteries on Artillery Hill. Alternatively, you can explore the two-mile sandy shoreline near the Point Wilson Lighthouse. The museum is also home to some educational institutions, including the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and the Coast Artillery Museum. In addition, you can take a look at the area’s natural resources from the pier.

The smells that surround the Port Townsend paper mill can be overwhelming. The aeration stabilizing basin and digester both smell like sauerkraut and dead mice. In addition to this, the stink zone is located on Highway 20. Although the city’s efforts to rid itself of the stink are commendable, the pollution is a concern. In the meantime, there is a lot of public outcry.
