If you’re traveling to Gallup New Mexico, you’ll find several things to see and do. This small city is located along historic Route 66. Some of the city’s attractions include Red Rock Park, which contains Anasazi archaeological sites. The Red Rock Museum focuses on the heritage of these people and has displays of pottery, silver, and jewelry. Native American crafts are featured at the Gallup Cultural Center. The Rex Museum covers the history of the city, and the nearby Santa Fe National Monument is a popular place to see local and historical events.

Visitors to Gallup will enjoy the diverse cultural and historic heritage of the area. The town is home to a vibrant intercultural population. Because of its diversity, it is also the ideal location for filming iconic Southwest scenes. The surrounding scenery and Native American cultural traditions are so unique, you’ll love the city’s historic buildings and monuments. This city is located in the interior Mountain West, making it an ideal place to visit during any season.

The city has a unique mix of Anglo, Spanish, and Native American cultures. The town’s population is roughly equal between the three groups. Authentic art, crafts, and Indian breads are readily available at the Gallup Flea Market. The upscale shopping district has many art galleries and Native American craft booths. One of the biggest attractions of Gallup is the beautiful murals in the downtown area. The Gallup-McKinley County Chamber of Commerce offers a walking tour to showcase the murals. The downtown area has three murals within walking distance of the Chamber of Commerce. Richard K. Yazzie’s memorial piece is located at the intersection of Third Street and W. Hill Avenue. In addition, Zuni artist Geddy Epaloose has painted a tribute to the life and culture of the Zuni on the west wall of the Octavia Fellin Public Children’s Library.

The economy of the city is based on coal mining. For a time, the town was known as “Carbon City” because of the abundance of coal. Its first inhabitants were railroad workers and westerners looking for work. There are still some historic structures in the area and the city is home to many museums.
