First of all, Grants Pass Oregon has a unique history. The people who originally settled here were the River Takelma. They were forced to move from their homes by war and treaty in 1853 and a disease epidemic. Once the Oregon and California Railroad connected Medford to Grants Pass in 1883, the town began to grow and became a shipping hub. Today, Grants Pass remains one of Oregon’s most picturesque destinations.

Visitors to Grants Pass can relax and enjoy the town’s many parks and open spaces. Tussing Park and Lawnridge Park are excellent locations for picnicking. Riverside Park and George H Eckstein Park are also great places to get some exercise. While you’re in town, check out the Josephine County Historical Society Museum for a glimpse into its rich history. Other great attractions include the Siskiyou National Forest and the Asian Cultural Festival. Higher education is available in the town as well. In addition to the local colleges and universities, there is also the Oregon Institute of Technology and Rogue Valley International.

Art lovers will enjoy the numerous art galleries and street murals that line the streets of Grants Pass. The town’s Rogue River reaches over 15 feet above flood stage and will crest over that height in future flood events. The city’s 5.6 square mile-long Gilbert Creek, which provides drainage to the area, has had many floods in the past. The city’s street crossings are also affected by overflowing creeks, especially after heavy rains.

Travelers to Grants Pass should be aware that the town is located in a region where earthquake activity is high.
