15 Reasons Why you should Stay in Kodiak Island Alaska

May 5, 2022 | More: Kodiak Island Alaska| Why Travel to

While visiting Kodiak Island, you can enjoy the natural beauty of this pristine region. During July, August, and September, brown bears can be seen in their natural habitat. Visitors can join flightseeing tours to view the bears at close quarters. Some of these tours can include hip-high boots, which are necessary to walk in the water and view wildlife. Other excursions, such as kayaking, focus on bear viewing.

Whether you prefer rustic charm or luxury, Kodiak Island offers a wide variety of accommodations to fit your budget. Many of these hotels are bed and breakfasts, and offer peace and quiet. Many of them even offer scenic views of the sea. Alternatively, you can book a stay in one of the many remote wilderness lodges on the island. Such lodges offer multi-day packages that include transportation to some of the most picturesque sites in the island. Some of these packages include bear viewing, hiking, fishing, and more.

Recreational fishermen can enjoy freshwater fishing in Kodiak. They can catch rainbow trout, steelhead, and more. LingCod is another popular species, and recreational fishermen often take home a meal of the delicious flesh. The flesh is white, flaky, and mild in flavor. Guests can also take home their catch with free transportation from Kodiak. Whether you want to enjoy fresh salmon, trout, or crabs, Kodiak has it all.

If you love whale watching, Kodiak is an excellent destination. The island’s many bays and protected inlets are perfect for viewing whales. Gray whales and killer whales migrate through the area in the early spring, while humpbacks, minke, and finbacks spend the summer on the island. Visitors can even observe them during the early May to early June season. The best way to see these creatures is to book a tour of Kodiak Island from a local charter boat.

The Alutiiq Museum is a great place to learn about Kodiak’s indigenous culture. This museum’s store sells hand-made Native crafts and books about the history of Alaskans. The Kodiak History Museum preserves the island’s rich history, and is located in a 200-year-old National Historic Landmark building. It is home to the largest Coast Guard base in the United States.

The cost of visiting Kodiak Island varies according to your chosen method of travel and length of stay. However, a seven-day trip can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on the route you take. If you book your plane tickets well in advance, you can even score affordable plane tickets. However, travel time to and from Kodiak Island may take several days, depending on when you plan to visit the island.

The landscape of Kodiak Island is largely unspoiled and spectacular. You can even experience the polar bears in their natural habitat. These critters live alongside the indigenous communities. The Inupiaq village of Kaktovik, located on the mainland, is one of the best places to see polar bears. These creatures congregate here during the summer, waiting for the Beaufort Sea to freeze.
