The history of Oakland is rich and varied. The Black Panther Party of California was founded in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale and quickly gained a following with its Ten-Point Platform. Originally a Chinese neighborhood, Oakland is now home to one of the largest Latino populations in the US. During the 20th century, the city was called the “Detroit of the West” and was the birthplace of the Black Panther Party.

The city experiences a Mediterranean-type climate with low humidity. Average temperatures are around 59 degrees Fahrenheit with a low of 44 degrees. Winters are mild and rarely reach freezing temperatures. Oakland receives less than four inches of snow per year, with the last measurable snowfall being in 2011 and 1976. However, visitors should be aware that the city is not completely crime-free. Despite the high crime rate, the city is generally safe and has a vibrant nightlife.

The population of Oakland increased over the years. The city’s population increased from about 33,000 in 1850 to more than six million in 2007. Its population has grown by 50 percent since then and the population is now above its 1950 levels. While the number of African Americans in Oakland declined over the decades, Hispanics increased to almost one-fifth of the total population.
