One of the best things to do in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is to shop. The historic downtown area is lined with shops and cafes, and the North Church stands proud as the focal point. There are also numerous restaurants and historic buildings that make for an interesting walk. Many of the local walking tours start here, so make sure to take one! A must-stop while shopping in the downtown area is Tugboat Alley, where you can find nautical-themed gifts. You may also want to visit the Salt Cellar and Off Piste, where you can find a unique gift.

Another must-see while visiting Portsmouth is the Music Hall. This historic theater features multiple stages and seats 1,000 people. The theater has been the place for numerous notable performances over the years, including multiple Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winners. It also hosts dance recitals. Ticket purchasing options are plentiful, and it’s easy to find an event you’ll love. You’ll find live music, theater, dance, and other entertainment in Portsmouth.

For a casual meal, try Friendly Toast, a popular brunch spot on Congress Street. The flamboyant decor and delicious food have made Friendly Toast a popular destination for locals. Moxy is another popular spot in Portsmouth, and both share similar menus. The Franklin also offers an award-winning wine list. Its Kate the Great beer, named the best in America, is an award-winning brew. The Franklin also has a retail store, so you can get souvenirs from the region’s wineries.

A historic home is another must-see for visitors to Portsmouth. One of the most famous is Governor John Langdon House, which is open to the public from June through October. This beautiful Georgian mansion has ornate woodwork, period decoration, and furnishings. It is a three-term governor of New Hampshire and was a signer of the constitution. Langdon’s daughter played for President George Washington in 1789. The Governor’s house grounds are open from dawn to dusk, and tours of the home are offered at least once every hour.

A historic home dating back to the 1760s, the Moffatt-Ladd House is also a must-see in Portsmouth. The home is a National Historic Landmark and features original furnishings and decorative features from that time. The Moffatt-Ladd House is also worth a visit, as it displays some of the country’s finest Georgian mansions. Inside, you’ll find French scenic wallpaper from 1820, and a portrait by Gilbert Stuart.

If you have more time on your hands, you can also check out the Portsmouth Athenaeum. This historic building, which is home to more than 40,000 volumes, is a great place to spend a day. There are several hotels in the area, including the historic Hotel Portsmouth. The Randall Room Exhibition Gallery hosts frequent exhibits and free events. You can also find author talks, book signings, and concerts here. If you are looking for a hotel in Portsmouth, you might want to choose a different property.
