The city’s downtown district is the oldest district. Located in Temple Square, the Downtown district is the city’s business and administrative hub. It was planned as an agricultural town but Brigham Young arrived in the city over a decade later. After the discovery of silver, Salt Lake City’s downtown changed radically. Suburbanization began in the 1970s, and the Downtown was redeveloped in the late 20th century. There are now more than 4,000 church buildings located throughout the valley.
Couples will love the Avenues neighborhood. This neighborhood is brimming with Victorian homes, including the aforementioned Hatch Family Chocolates. The restaurant features a variety of vegan, dairy, and espresso-based drinks. The Avenues is also fast-gaining a reputation as a hip and artsy area thanks to the presence of the Salt Lake Acting Company. So, you can find an ideal apartment in this neighborhood and still get to the heart of Downtown without having to travel too far.
Though many people associate Salt Lake City with Mormons, there are plenty of Catholics in the city. The Cathedral of the Madeleine was built in the year 1900, and took a decade to finish. It is now on the National Register and the Utah Register of Historic Sites. Besides the Cathedral, you can also visit the Capitol Building. Built in 1912, it has 5 floors and an iconic spire-topped dome. It cost $2.7 million to build and is now worth $260 million in renovations. The Cathedral of the Madeleine is also on the National Register.
