Castine is a town in Hancock County in eastern Maine. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,320. The town is also home to the Maine Maritime Academy, a four-year institution that trains marine engineers and officers for the United States Merchant Marine. More than 1000 students attend the Academy. The school was established in 1886, and has grown to include many new businesses and amenities. The town is home to more than a thousand residents.
The Wilson Museum in Castine offers a close look at local history. Here, visitors can see reconstructed kitchens from 1805 and ship models. For those interested in learning more about the early history of the area, the museum is a great starting point. It also features a great view of the harbor, which makes it a great place to watch the sunrise during the summer. If you are looking for entertainment, you can check out nearby towns in Portland.

While visiting Castine, make sure to take a free walking tour. There are also two walking tours, which are both about a half mile and take about an hour to complete. Neither of these tours include the forts, but they cover other interesting aspects of the town’s history. In addition to its historical sites, the town is home to an impressive collection of fossils, including some 300-million-year-old trilobites. You can also take a harbor cruise, or even kayak in the bioluminescent bay.
While you’re in Castine, make sure to stop in at the Pentagoet Inn, a charming 1894 B&B. The restaurant serves excellent food and friendly service. If you’re a fan of local seafood, be sure to try their seafood dishes. If you’re traveling with a family, you’ll want to make reservations at the Town Docks. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the rest of the town, and take in the historic sights.
