15 Tourist Attractions in Hampton and Newport News Virginia

April 29, 2022 | More: Hampton and Newport News Virginia| Tourist Attractions

If you’re planning a vacation to the area, consider visiting Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. The two cities are part of Hampton Roads, the metro area comprising Virginia and North Carolina. This historic area has an abundance of history and is close to many attractions, including Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. Located in Coastal Virginia, these cities are home to the oldest buildings in the nation. Listed below are some of the most noteworthy historic sites.

Some of the city’s major industries include defense, shipbuilding, and aerospace. Newport News Shipbuilding is a major employer of local residents, while CSX Transportation supplies the area’s large coal piers. Both the James River Bridge and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel connect the two cities to surrounding communities. The area is also home to several art galleries and museums. In addition to its maritime history, Newport News has a vibrant downtown.

The city’s rich history dates back over 400 years. Whether you’re interested in pirates, the local crab and oyster industry, or even man’s first steps on the moon, the area is rich in history. If you’re looking to experience the history of the region in a museum setting, Hampton and Newport News Virginia are the places for you. And for the kids, there’s the Hampton and Newport News History Museum.

Visitors to Hampton and Newport News, Virginia should not miss the famous Jefferson Lab. This world-class national laboratory specializes in particle physics. The lab has been in the city for 30 years and has received over $3.2 billion in federal funding. The lab has made many groundbreaking discoveries in nuclear physics, and attracts nearly 1,600 international users each year. These scientific institutions provide jobs and boost the local economy. And if you’re an athlete, the Newport News and Hampton Beach sports teams are an excellent way to stay active.

For many years, Newport News voted as a solid Southern county. In 1928, the city was boosted by anti-Catholic voting and later became a swing county. From 1956 to 2004, Newport News voted increasingly Democratic. However, in 2008, the county’s political landscape became solidly Democratic. Its large African American population meant that the presidential election in 2008 saw the Democratic Party win with 60 percent of the vote. The lynching memorial in Newport News is a great place to remember the victims of the Civil War. The city’s lynching memorial is located on the inside row of the memorial square. It has a stained memorial due to water flowing off the roof. Lynchings were rare in Virginia, but they did happen. In the county of Warwick, one African American man, William Watts, was lynched by a white officer. The lynching resulted in a criminal investigation but no one was ever charged.

The CJA has specific goals and monthly reports are submitted to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Hampton and Newport News’ juvenile courts have supported the CCD’s use. Since implementation of the CCCA, placements to CCD reached a record high of 3,522 in FY2000.5. This represents a 96% increase. For more information about CCD, visit the Fortify website. These websites are designed to connect the Hampton and Newport News areas’ pediatricians with other health care providers.
