15 Tourist Attractions in Lopez Island

July 29, 2022 | More: Tourist Attractions

If you’re looking for a great vacation spot, consider a stay on Lopez Island. The third largest of the San Juan Islands, Lopez is an unincorporated town in San Juan County, Washington. The island’s population of 2,177 at the time of the 2000 census swells during the summer. Many second homes, rental houses, and campsites are located on the island, and visitors often enjoy their stay for a week or more.

The island’s 1,000-acre national park is the perfect place to relax after a day on the water. Enjoy a picnic lunch while you soak up the view. If you have time, take a whale-watching tour. There are plenty of hammocks and water-themed attractions to enjoy. And if you want to relax and rejuvenate, you can visit the historic Lopez Schoolhouse. It was used as a school from 1917 to 1941.

The island is home to many attractions, including the 1887-built Center Church, a pioneer cemetery, and a large mooring area at the Islander Resort. Snorkeling here is a must, and you may even spot a resident whale or seal. There are also many species of birds. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach or a business retreat, Lopez Island has something for you.

A fun way to explore the island is by kayak. The calm waters of the surrounding ocean make for great kayaking. You can rent a kayak or book a guided tour. Biking is another great activity on Lopez Island. While the terrain is mostly flat, there are a few hilly parts. If you have a bike, you can explore many of the island’s hidden gems by bicycle. Just make sure to make a reservation for the ferry before you set off.

There is also a bike trail on Lopez Island. There are several paths, and many people from all over the Pacific Northwest ride their bikes on the island. The tour is held every year, and cyclists from all over the Pacific Northwest come to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The flat terrain, low speed limits, and friendly islanders make biking on Lopez Island a perfect destination for bikers. For those who don’t have their own bike, the ferry terminal offers bike rentals. A large selection of bikes can be rented in the village of Lopez.

The historical society and museum gives an overview of the island’s history. Amelia Davis’s sister, Amelia, brought many social offerings to their island neighbors. The Davis’ home served as a library, Sunday school, and dispensary. The museum is open by appointment. The museum also hosts a number of events and tours. This is a great way to get to know the community and learn more about the island’s history.

The first permanent non-Native settlers on Lopez were Hiram E. Hutchinson and his family. They homesteaded on the southwest side of the island and obtained a territorial land license from the British government. Soon after, they left the island for the coal industry in Bellingham. A year later, their son Millard was born. During this time, Hutch’s sister came and helped with the store. The history of Lopez Island dates back to the early 1800s.
