May 13, 2022 | More: Macon Georgia| Tourist Attractions

A visit to Macon Georgia is a great opportunity to discover a town that celebrates its black heritage. This Southern city is home to the Tubman Museum, a cultural center dedicated to African American history. The museum contains both permanent and visiting exhibits. It also hosts a Pan-African festival each April, as well as movie nights and live music. You can visit all of these sites during your visit to Macon. Listed below are a few things to do while in Macon.

The Macon Museum of Art & History provides plenty of opportunities for art lovers and kids alike. Founded in 1908, this museum offers an interactive experience for children, including a mini-zoo and hands-on experiments. The museum is open daily and offers programs for schools, groups, and even field trips. The Museum is an excellent place for the whole family to spend a sunny afternoon. And, with a permanent exhibit on Georgia history, you can learn about the region’s diverse history from the beginning.

Amerson River Park: This park has seven miles of hiking and biking trails. The park also features a playground. Water activities are available in the Amerson River, including a two-mile tubing excursion. Both the park and the museum are open seven days a week, and are well worth the trip. This park is a great place for a relaxing afternoon. There are even music performances at the park. You can’t go wrong in Macon Georgia – you won’t be disappointed!

The Grand Opera House – One of the historic landmarks in Macon, the Grand Opera House, is located in the heart of the downtown district. The building was built in the late 1800s and expanded in 1904 to accommodate the growing population of the middle Georgia region. It was also the home of Will Rogers and Harry Houdini. If you love classical music, Macon Georgia has plenty to offer. The Macon Symphony Orchestra and the Macon Ballet Company are two places to see some of the most famous artists of the American music world.

Another popular attraction for music lovers is the Richard Penniman tour. The legendary singer was born in Macon and got his big break at the Macon City Auditorium. The gospel singer asked him to open her concert, which he accepted and then began to perform in more major cities. This was the catalyst that set him on the road to fame. With that success, he sought out other acts and continued to tour the world. In fact, he is still a big draw today.

A visit to Rose Hill Cemetery is an experience in itself. The cemetery contains the graves of several famous people, including Gregg Allman and Berry Oakley. The site also inspired the Allman Brothers Band’s song “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Rose Hill Cemetery was originally planned as a park in Macon. You can tour the different cemeteries in the area on Rose Hill Ramble, which features a variety of architectural designs and building materials. Those interested in learning more about Georgia’s history and culture can opt for guided tours or groups of 10 or more.
