15 Tourist Attractions in Savannah Georgia

June 27, 2022 | More: Savannah Georgia| Tourist Attractions

You can’t go to Savannah Georgia without visiting Fort Jackson, the city’s renowned museum of art and history. This unique museum features a hands-on experience with real soldiers and hosts dinner parties, as well as a dynamic collection of art and sculptures. The museum is open to the public, so you can also get henna tattoos and enjoy fine dining while looking at the art and sculptures displayed on the rooftop. The Fort was once a rundown rooming house, but has since been restored to resemble an 1830s open-air market.

Visitors can explore the historic homes in the city and get a taste of the early days of slave life in Savannah. Built in the 1820s, the Davenport House now serves as a museum that tells the history of life in middle-class Savannah. Tours are offered daily. You can also take a tour of the Gothic Revival mansion, Green-Meldrim House, which was once occupied by General Sherman during the Civil War.

If you’d like to shop for unique souvenirs and unique gifts, make sure to head to Broughton Street. Shops on this street include Paris Market, 24e Design Co., and other shops that offer curated gifts from around the world. The Paris Market cafe is a gorgeous addition to the downtown experience. You can also check out the famous Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which was featured in the film “Forrest Gump.” You can also check out the beach at Tybee Island, which is only 30 minutes away from Savannah.

Old Fort Jackson is another interesting historic landmark. It was used as a Confederate military base during the Civil War, but was taken over by Union troops when Savannah surrendered in December 1864. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark. If you’re planning to visit Savannah, don’t miss out on the Girl Scouts birthplace. This landmark is a great place to learn about the origin of the Girl Scout movement, and it’s also an interesting way to see Savannah’s past.

Old Town Trolley Tours and Old Savannah Tours offer daily trolley tours of downtown Savannah. While the tours are easy to navigate on foot, they also offer a “hop on, hop off” option for tourists. The tours are accompanied by commentary about the history and culture of the area. You can also visit the numerous art galleries in downtown Savannah. There are many galleries here that showcase both local and regional artwork. For example, Gallery 209 features contemporary and traditional art, while Kobo presents feminist and local art.

For those looking to try a unique sandwich, head to Zunzi’s on 37th Street in Savannah, GA. This counter-serve deli in the city’s Historic District has become a favorite local destination. Try the Conquistador sandwich, which features French bread, baked chicken breast, lettuce, and Zunzi’s special sauce. The 45 Bistro in a historic Civil War hospital is another must-visit, especially if you’re visiting the city’s Historic District. A delicious and unique meal awaits you.
