For history buffs, a visit to Fort de Soto will make for an educational and fun day. Named after Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, the fort was built during the Civil War and eventually closed. It later served as a WWII bombing range. After the war, the fort was turned into a park and opened to the public in 1962.
