15 Tourist Attractions in Taos New Mexico

December 15, 2021 | More: Taos New Mexico| Tourist Attractions

Situated in northern New Mexico’s high desert, Taos is a quaint and charming town filled with historic adobe buildings. The Pueblo of Old Taos is a multi-story adobe complex that was home to Native Americans for centuries. The town is also home to many museums and galleries, including the Taos Art Museum and the Harwood Museum of Art. No trip to Taos is complete without a visit to the art museums and galleries.

The city’s population is just over 5,000, but it’s worth a visit. Visitors can sample the local cuisine and culture at various restaurants and cafes. The vibrant and diverse cultural scene in Taos offers something for everyone – whether you’re looking to spend a weekend shopping or taking in some live music, there is a variety of activities for you to participate in. There are also a number of festivals and events throughout the year, so make sure to plan your trip accordingly.

If you’re interested in learning more about the region’s history, the town’s museums have something to offer. There are several Native American museums and one featuring artwork by local and Hispanic artists. The Kit Carson Home & Museum was built in 1825 and tells the story of the legendary American frontier explorer. Another museum is the Millicent Rogers Museum, which features Southwestern artwork. The museum was started by Millicent Rogers’ son, who converted her collection of her paintings into an exhibition that spans fourteen galleries.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll love the Martinez Hacienda, which was built in the year 1804. Once a massive Spanish estate, the Martinez Hacienda is one of the best places to spend a day or evening in Taos. This museum has many galleries displaying paintings and other historical items. No trip to Taos would be complete without taking a tour of this historic property.

The Taos Art Museum is a great place to start your trip. The museum has a countless selection of works of art from local artists and craftspeople. In addition to viewing the artwork, the museum also features fun programs for children and even a meditation program. There are many boutiques to shop for, including local handicrafts, jewelry, and books. A farmers market is held every Saturday during the summer.

The San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church is another must-see on the high road from Santa Fe. This stunning adobe church was made famous by Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams, and it’s still a must-see for any art lover. Its adobe facade is beautiful, and the church is home to a beautiful museum that is free to visit.
