The Franconia Notch State Park was founded in 1891 as Miller State Park, and in 1928 became an official New Hampshire State Park. This region is a classic example of the northern Appalachian glaciated valley. It is home to numerous geological features, including examples of glacial meltwater and pre- and post-glacial landscapes. If you visit Franconia Notch, you’ll discover examples of different geomorphic regimes.

The Flume Gorge is a natural wonder, with moss-covered walls 12 to 20 feet high that make for a scenic walkway. This 2-mile loop offers spectacular views of the gorge, including cascading waterfalls, glacial pools, and large boulders. If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, you can try the Alpine Trail. You can also hike along the Appalachian Trail in this area.

The French name for the notch refers to a glacier in the area. This glacier is about a mile high at its highest point and is one of the most beautiful places in New England. The town’s natural beauty makes it a popular vacation destination for travelers from around the world. During the Ice Age, the Laurentide Ice Sheet extended across modern day New England, covering much of the White Mountains. Once the ice sheet began to melt, water flow from this glacier eventually made it possible for the valley to form. It is an area rich with nature and history.
