While irrigation and flood control were originally intended to be used for a variety of purposes, the Grand Coulee Dam is primarily used for hydropower. In the 1940s, the project was temporarily suspended because of World War II. The project required more time, money, and engineering skill than Grand Coulee does, but it is still an impressive piece of landscape. This photo shows the geometric transformation of the land with the help of water.

Once World War II was over, the Northwest economy flourished. The first water pumped from Grand Coulee began reaching Columbia Basin lands. Ultimately, the project was designed to supply water to 1.1 million acres of land in the area. Crops grown today range from forage to cereal grains, as well as fruit and vegetables. The Columbia Basin is also an important source of wine grapes. In fact, there are many types of water pumped out of the Columbia Basin each year.

The construction of the dam also created jobs and a vital economic boon for the region. The dam, built on the Columbia River, completed in late 1942, was a major boost to the city. By mid-1945, it provided power to Boeing in Seattle and was a major source of aluminum for the region’s aircraft and aluminum industries. By the end of World War II, it was estimated that 36% of the nation’s aluminum production came from the Pacific Northwest.
