In 1779, the Sullivan Expedition passed through the region. The former Central New York Military Tract was incorporated into the Town of Ithaca in 1821. In 1865, Ezra Cornell donated land for Cornell University. The town has a total area of 30.3 square miles (78.5 km2).

There are over 150 waterfalls in and around Ithaca. Glaciers carved these gorges thousands of years ago, which are visible from the town’s bridge over Fall Creek. The falls themselves are a sight to behold, and there are hiking trails that lead to them. While the town is surrounded by rolling hills and forests, waterfalls can still be seen from downtown. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take a hike on the nearby Cayuga Creek.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of arts and culture while in town. The State Theatre of Ithaca is a historic theater that features 1600 seats. It is home to the Dalai Lama’s unofficial North American monastery. Monks hold meditation sessions and offer summer retreats to visitors.

In the 1870s, Morse Chain, an automobile-related factory, was located in downtown Ithaca. In the late 1800s, the company merged with Emerson Power Transmission in nearby Lansing, New York, and the city’s first public transportation service was born.

The town is a college town, and has a seasonal population of 32,108. Cornell University and Ithaca College are located in the city’s South Hill area. Other nearby colleges include Tompkins Cortland Community College. Several businesses also serve as small business headquarters. Ithaca has an art and culture-oriented atmosphere. In recent years, the city has become a popular destination for retirees.
