After the American Civil War, Milwaukee experienced several major changes. The population began to decline, and African Americans accounted for nearly two-thirds of the city’s population by 2000. The city remained an important manufacturing city until the 1980s, but beer production declined. By the early 21st century, Milwaukee had only one major brewery. This was because the city’s population was more diverse than any other major city in the “Rust Belt.”

The climate in Milwaukee changes quickly. In the winter, temperatures remain relatively low, and during the summer, it can be humid and hot. The average high in Milwaukee is 84 degrees Fahrenheit (106 degrees Fahrenheit). The highest monthly temperature was 105 degrees Fahrenheit on July 24, 1934, and the lowest was -32 degrees Fahrenheit on February 4, 1996. During the winter months, this wind-driven air helps moderate the cold air outbreaks along the lakeshore.
