The history of San Juan Island is fascinating, as it was the subject of a “Pig War” between the English and the Americans, who argued over the island’s ownership. The English had military camps on the north end, while the Americans built theirs on the south. The American had shot an English pig, which led to the name “Pig War.”

While visiting San Juan Island, be sure to stop by a farm and taste some local fare. The local farmers market is located on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands. It extends into March and October, and its rows of vendors and stalls are worth checking out. There’s even a lavender farm! Pelindaba Lavender is a popular local farm, and Krystal Acres is a fun farm experience. Afterglow Vista Mausoleum is also worth a side trip.

English Camp has a rich history. You’ll find old buildings and plaques that commemorate the island’s rich history. The beach, which was once known as Salmon Banks, is the longest stretch of public shoreline on San Juan Island. Tidepooling is an enjoyable pastime on this island. In the spring, orca whales are commonly visible offshore. During these months, you can take a stroll on the shore.
