The city has a number of historic colleges and universities, including the University of California at Santa Barbara, which was founded in 1891. The Santa Barbara City Community College was founded in 1946, and the University of California was originally a private school, but organized in 1944. It is a popular weekend destination in Southern California, and is home to numerous free attractions. There are also plenty of family-friendly attractions to enjoy in Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art was founded in 1941 and features a large library, auditorium, and cafe.

Wine lovers will be delighted by the abundance of wineries in Santa Barbara. The area is one of the top wine destinations in the state, with many sprawling vineyards and fertile valleys. You can also sample some of the many varieties at the Zaca Mesa Winery, a family-run winery just 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The city also boasts plenty of great restaurants, from harborside classics to hip and happening Funk Zone restaurants.
