Founded in the 1870s, Steamboat Springs began life as a small ranching community. French fur traders named the area because they believed the trickling spring sounds like a steamboat. However, the natural spring became silent after a dynamite explosion in the early 1900s, causing the foundation to shift and silence the spring. The first permanent resident of the town, James Crawford, claimed the townsite in 1875. In 1900, the town was incorporated.
