However, the cities have embraced their industrial history, and celebrate Smeltermens’ Week and other events. You can buy copper-plated Moscow mule mugs at the Berkeley Pit gift shop or crack your own geodes for $5 at a nearby visitor center. A visit to the Berkeley Pit, a historic smelter, can also be part of the trip. It’s a fascinating place to spend the day and you can learn a lot about this area’s history.

A visit to the Butte and Anaconda Superfund site is a unique experience. The railroad was built on the hard work, innovation, and community of its founder, Marcus Daly. The city’s industrial heritage has been fully embraced through the town’s annual Smeltermens’ Week celebration. In addition to the geology museum, there is a copper-plated Moscow mule mug for $5 and a crack-your-own geode kit for $3. The 1,500-foot-wide pit is open to the public for viewing, and there is a view of a nearby mountain range.

Aside from the Butte and Anaconda, both communities also had Chinatowns. The latter was formed in 1883 as a result of a copper smelting operation. The Chinese community was originally centered on Birch Street, between Front Street and East Park Avenue. Some of the first businesses in Anaconda were the Sing Lee Laundry and the Tri Yeun Company.

Butte is the hidden soul of Montana. It began as a mining town in the 19th century and quickly grew into a vibrant community with people of all races.
