Top 15 Places to Visit in El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments New Mexico

March 15, 2022 | More: El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments New Mexico| Places to Visit

If you are traveling to western New Mexico, you will want to spend some time touring the beautiful landscape of El Malpais and the neighboring El Morro National Monument. Both of these stunning national parks are situated in the Southwestern United States. The names of these two parks come from the Spanish term “malpas,” which means “badlands.” The namesake of these desert areas is a barren volcanic field.

You can explore El Malpais National Monument in Grants, New Mexico. The visitor center is located in the historic Dittert Site, which was home to ancestral Puebloans. This site contains seasonal pools, and a variety of cultural artifacts. If you are traveling with a family, you can take a trip to the Dittert Site, which is located in the canyon’s western part.

In the northern portion of the park, you can visit the Dittert Site. This site was home to ancestral Puebloans, including the Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni. The area is also home to several species of bats, including the elusive white-nose syndrome. Though the caves of El Malpais are off-limits for visitors, you can still enjoy the majesty of the area.

The first monument in New Mexico, El Malpais, is a fascinating display of volcanology and lava flows. The second monument, El Morro, has a petroglyph-filled wall and a partially excavated Pueblo village. The two national monuments provide a breathtaking backdrop for a memorable vacation. You will have an amazing time exploring both of these sites.

The El Morro National Monument is one of the most beautiful places in New Mexico. While it is not very popular, it is worth a visit if you are visiting the area. The ice cave at El Malpais is the second largest in the state. You can walk along the lava cave, where temperatures never exceed 31 degrees Fahrenheit. The ice cave has a floor that is 20 feet thick and the deepest part is 3,400 years old. Admission is required, so don’t forget to bring plenty of cash.

The Inscription Trail is a half mile long and offers spectacular views of the sandstone bluff and surrounding landscape. The headland trail is also well worth a visit, as it is a great way to take in the scenery and explore the ruins of Atsinna. While this is a large park, it is the ideal place to take a break from the city.

The El Morro Monument is located on an ancient east-west trail in the western part of the state. Throughout the years, people have left their marks on the petroglyphs, which are very well preserved. In the 19th century, the Zuni Indians left their mark, while later Americans and Spanish people made their marks. The monuments were formed in 1987, and both monuments are managed by the same organization.
