Top 15 Places to Visit in Flathead Indian Reservation Montana

March 17, 2022 | More: Flathead Indian Reservation Montana| Places to Visit

The Flathead Indian Reservation is a large area located in western Montana. The tribal members of this land are the Kootenai, Pend d’Oreilles, and Bitterroot Salish. This area has a rich history and culture. You can visit this tribal area and explore their culture and traditions. It is also a good place to get acquainted with the native American people of the region. In this article, you will learn about their history and culture.

The reservation is home to the Salish and Kootenai tribes. They lived in this area about 14,000 years ago. The Pend d’Oreille and Salish tribes shared the land, and in the 1700s they hunted bison. You can still see bison in the National Bison Range. The land has been settled by various groups over the centuries, and the Catholic “Black Robes” worked to convert the Natives. They also built the St. Ignatius Mission, which is still active today.

The Flathead Reservation is part of the Lower Flathead reservation, which includes Wild Horse Island and five other scenic state units. The Wild Horse Island area is one of the most beautiful in the west, and is home to a variety of wildlife. During summer months, you can visit this beautiful area and try canoeing and hiking. You can also enjoy some excellent bird hunting on the Lower Plateau. The Flathead Reservation is located south of Kalispell, along the shores of Flathead Lake.

The Flathead Indian Reservation is made up of three distinct communities. The Old Agency is a town located in the southwest corner of the National Bison Range and has a population of 107. There are four mixed blood groups in this town. The northwestern part of the Reservation is called Elmo. It is located about 4 miles west of Wild Horse Island. The population of Elmo in 2010 is 180 people, including four mixed-bloods.

Originally, the Chippewas lived in the region of Quebec and the Great Lakes. In 1855, they created a reservation near Missoula. The reservation headquarters are in the Jocko Valley near the present day Arlee. In the area, there are about 20 Native communities. The entire Flathead Reservation has 24 distinct communities, though most of them are mostly white. There are also clusters of houses on the Reservation.

The Flathead Reservation is divided into two different regions, Turtle Mountain and the Bitterroot Valley. Despite the fact that many Flathead Indians live in a similar area, the majority of them are white. As a result, it is important to note that there are only a handful of predominantly Indian communities. This is because there is no real separation of the two cultures. The reservation also has a large number of indigenous communities.
