The Grand Coulee dam was originally designed as a low dam and only used for power production. The MWAK corporation built two cement plants to help with the construction. Each of these cement plants produced 640 cubic yards and 129,338 gallons of concrete per hour. During construction, workers drilled test holes of between thirty and 200 feet deep to check the quality of the rock beneath the dam. They also dug twenty to thirty foot deep grout holes for a secure seal under the dam.

The Columbia River flows into the basin, making it an ideal spot for camping. The area has many outcroppings of basalt and granite, making it ideal for different climbing styles. There are designated camping sites along the banks of Banks Lake. To access the lake, you can also rent a boat from Sunbanks Resort.
