April 28, 2022 | More: Places to Visit

Travelers visiting Hartford, Connecticut, should not miss the city’s renowned museums. The city is the home of the famous author Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was known for her struggle against slavery. Her book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is widely considered a seminal work in the abolitionist movement. Today, Hartford honors her by hosting the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, a museum dedicated to her life and inspiring campaign.

The first Hartford Art Museum building was constructed in 1782, and features artwork by famous American artists. The architecture of the building reflects its history; the architect Benjamin Wistar Morris designed the exterior and the interior. The Avery Memorial building, which opened in 1934, was the first museum building in the United States with a modern international style interior. The city’s only burial ground for 163 years, the Ancient Burying Ground is now a museum, but was originally larger. The development that surrounds the area has made the site smaller.
