Top 15 Places to Visit in Ipswich Newburyport and Plum Island

May 10, 2022 | More: Places to Visit

Ipswich Newburyport and nearby Plum Island are the perfect destinations for a romantic getaway. With its scenic beauty and rich history, these towns are well worth a visit. In this article, you’ll learn more about the history of these towns. If you’re planning a visit to the area, make sure to read the following points of interest. The towns were separated in 1764, but they still share a great deal of history and culture.

The towns of Ipswich, Newbury, and Plum Island are located along Cape Ann, a peninsula extending nearly to the border of New Hampshire. As a result, the towns are comparatively remote, with unspoiled shorelines that are popular with nature lovers. You can enjoy the solitude of nature in the wildlife sanctuaries and serene beaches. However, you’ll have to make the 22-mile round trip to reach each town’s beaches.

In the 17th century, there were several settlements in the region. The first was Newbury, which was later incorporated into Massachusetts. The island was originally under the jurisdiction of the General Court of Massachusetts. In 1635, it was shared between three towns, including Ipswich. Initially, the island was used for grazing. Cattle and horses were allowed to roam the island, destroying much of its vegetation.

On Plum Island, there are three great spots for swimming. There is one main beach, but parking is limited. Parking is sold in side lots. However, there are several restaurants and convenient stores on the island. Visiting these beaches is a fun activity for the whole family. Alternatively, you can check out the historic downtown or visit the many shops and restaurants. For food, try the local cuisine or take a short drive to nearby Newburyport.

There are several birdwatching opportunities in this area. The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on the south end of the island is a great place to spot piping plovers. The sanctuary is home to numerous bird species, including endangered shorebirds. You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the island by hiking or biking. During the summer, the park hosts family-friendly programming. You’ll even find a wildlife sanctuary where you can learn about the local culture.

The Plum Island Harbor Light is another attraction worth exploring in the town. This historic landmark was built in 1788 and replaced the older towers in 1898. The wooden conical tower stands 45 feet high above the beach. The original fourth-order Fresnel lens is still visible. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You’ll be glad you did! If you are planning to visit Ipswich, Massachusetts, you’ll have to make time for it!
