National Ranching Heritage Center – The National Ranching Heritage Center is a great way to learn about the history of ranching and the western frontier. This museum contains several educational installations, reconstructed historic buildings, and artifacts. This museum is located at 3121 4th Street, in Lubbock. Windmill Center – If you have a fascination for windmills, visit the Windmill Center, which was founded in 1977 by Billie Wolfe, a home economics teacher who spent her adult life researching and building windmills.
Buddy Holly Center – Located off I-27 on the southwest edge of downtown Lubbock, the Buddy Holly Center pays homage to the famous rock and roll musician, as well as the musical heritage of West Texas. The Center is home to a large collection of Buddy Holly memorabilia, including his famous Fender Stratocaster and other instruments. In addition, there are several exhibits that tell the story of his childhood and the meteoric rise to stardom.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema first opened in 1997 and has become a popular movie attraction in Lubbock. Originally, it only showed independent and foreign films, but today it’s the place to go for big-screen Hollywood blockbusters and local talent. If you’re traveling with children, check out the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to enjoy some good movies while keeping kids busy.
American Windmill Museum – The American Windmill Museum has over 160 different kinds of windmills, including the largest windmill museum in the world! The museum’s collection is categorized into ‘American style’ windmills, although you can also find some older machines. There are even wind electric machines and water pumping models. It’s definitely worth a visit, and you’ll love the museum’s interactive exhibits.
First Friday Art Trail – The First Friday Art Trail is a great way to discover some local art. You can tour galleries and visit artists, and you can even eat food trucks while you do it! Then, you can go for a night hike in the area around Lake Lubbock. If you’d like to spend a little more money, you can also visit one of Lubbock’s historical sites, such as Cook’s Garage, which is part art gallery and part restaurant. Despite being a historic gas station, the town has plenty of other things to do for tourists.
Another place to visit in Lubbock is the National Ranching Heritage Center. This museum features 500 collections of manuscripts and an educational theater. You can watch short films about ranching history, and pick up souvenirs to take home with you. While you’re in town, don’t miss the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Building. This 1913 building was originally the headquarters of the First National Bank of Lubbock.
