Top 15 Places to Visit in Raleigh North Carolina

June 15, 2022 | More: Places to Visit

If you are looking to explore the history of the state’s capital, consider visiting Raleigh, North Carolina. This historic city has plenty to offer visitors. The Marbles Museum has two levels and features dozens of hands-on exhibits, as well as a 3D-capable IMAX theater. For those interested in visual and performing arts, the city is full of art museums. You can also check out the city’s African American heritage in the Pope House Museum and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gardens, located in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The capital of North Carolina, Raleigh was destined to be a capital city. Named for Sir Walter Raleigh, an English colonist who founded a short-lived English settlement in the 1580s, the city was designed to be the state’s capital. It was once nicknamed the “City of Oaks,” but leaders have worked to preserve its trees and parks. These trees make Raleigh attractive, allowing visitors to enjoy the city’s modern glass and steel buildings while still absorbing the natural beauty of the surroundings.

There are plenty of fun activities for the whole family in Raleigh. Kids will enjoy the museum’s interactive exhibits, including Tree Tunes and Splash. Parents will enjoy the nearby Imax cinema, where you can catch the latest blockbusters and educational films. This fun, interactive museum is open to the public and is a great way to spend an afternoon. If you’re traveling with children, you can take them to Raleigh’s Adventure Park, where they can go zip lining, ride bikes, or climb through the ropes.

The North Carolina Museum of History has over 55,000 square feet of exhibit space, a research library, and an auditorium that seats 315 people. The museum’s largest exhibit, The Story of North Carolina, uses everyday objects to trace the lives of the people who lived in the state for thousands of years. Visitors can take in the exhibit by exploring the museum’s dioramas, interactive displays, and other interactive features. The museum also hosts the North Carolina State Farmers Market, a weekly marketplace featuring a wide range of fresh food and other local produce.

Another historic attraction is the Carolina Coach Garage. This 50,000-square-foot space was once the home of the state’s governor’s office and the chambers of the General Assembly. It is now home to 12 vendors and is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and sample a variety of local eats and drinks. The Historic City Market also has a variety of shops and restaurants to enjoy.

For coffee lovers, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is a must. The largest natural science museum in the southeast has interactive exhibits and a full schedule of educational programs. For families with young children, the museum features a period exhibit that takes visitors back to the colonial era. General admission is free, so there is no need to pay a lot of money to visit. Many visitors enjoy this museum, including children. If you’re looking for an educational experience, make sure to visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC.
