Top 15 Places to Visit in Sacramento

June 23, 2022 | More: Places to Visit

Shopping in Sacramento is a fun experience and the capital city is no exception. Midtown Sacramento offers shopping, theater, comedy shows, and gourmet dining at trendy restaurants. During the holiday season, you’ll find crowded boutiques and art galleries. For more shopping options, check out the Handle District. Many art galleries participate in Second Saturdays, when the doors open for a free reception. And if you’re not into malls, head to the Capitol Square area for more shopping options.

The city’s architecture has many noteworthy sights, including the Old Sac and Tower Bridge. The city is also home to the famous Ziggurat, a 15-story pyramid designed by a famous artist who also created Barack Obama’s “Hope” print. For history buffs, Sacramento is home to two free museums: the California Automobile Museum and the California State Railroad Museum. Whether you’re a fan of dinosaurs or cars, there’s a museum to fit your interests.

Nearby San Francisco is a popular destination. A two-hour drive away, Lake Tahoe offers hiking trails and deep blue water. In the winter, Tahoe offers some of the best skiing in the state. Yosemite National Park is just a half-day drive away. Sacramento is also near Redwood State and National Parks, which are home to giant redwood trees. Whether you’re looking for an adventure or simply want to relax and take in the view, Sacramento has it all.

A visit to the California State Capitol is an excellent way to learn about the history of California. The state capitol building is the official seat of government, and the museum features a collection of historic flags from the California Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World Wars. You can tour the museum’s museum for free on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Afterwards, stroll through Capitol Park’s forty acres of parkland. You’ll be surrounded by trees from around the world.

The Old Sacramento district is another great place for dining and shopping. This area was built during the Gold Rush and features many beautiful buildings. Take note of the horse-drawn carriages and wooden sidewalks while strolling the streets. There are many restaurants and shops to check out. You can dine on delicious produce in Sacramento at one of its many restaurants. There are also several outdoor markets in Sacramento, and the city is a great place to relax with friends and family.

Visitors can also spend time at Sacramento’s Cathedral. There are daily Eucharist services, and special ceremonies are held here as well. The Sacramento Cathedral is located downtown, less than two blocks from the State Capitol. The Hyatt Regency Sacramento offers luxurious accommodations in the city’s downtown area. The hotel has a spa, an outdoor pool with cabanas, and a hot tub. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the city’s historic buildings. For dining, head to the farm-to-fork Grange Restaurant.

A visit to the California State Railroad Museum is another great option for sightseeing. This museum is comprised of six buildings and is 225,000 square feet. Exhibits explore the history of California’s railroads. You can see restored locomotives and train cars, including the famous gold-rush years. You can even take a train ride if you wish! And, of course, train rides are available in the historic section of Old Sacramento. Getting to the Capitol and other attractions by foot is a quick and easy way to spend your Sacramento vacation.
