Its history dates back to 1827, when Nathan Wood built the town as a public house. In addition to its historic importance, Middlebury is home to Middlebury College. Its history is rich in local and national heritage. To date, Middlebury has welcomed many famous visitors from all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a wine or beer lover, the region has some great wineries and distilleries. There&#8217;s a five-mile wine, brewery, and distillery trail, starting with the Lincoln Peak Vineyard, where you can refill your wine growlers. Other wineries and distilleries along the trail include Otter Creek Brewing Co., WhistlePig Whiskey, and Drop-In Brewing Co.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Middlebury may not be the largest in the state, it&#8217;s an excellent opportunity to learn about the area&#8217;s history. Many local producers have unique stories to tell, so make sure to stop in and try a few different products. Try the local food, or grab a tasty snack from Otter Creek Bakery. A 70-year old institution, the Vermont Book Shop has helped Middlebury become a cultural hub. It attracts creative people, and many of its businesses support local artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A time-honored country inn is another excellent place to stay while in Middlebury. The Swift House Inn has been home to the post office since 1814, and has been a favorite meeting place for residents since Nathan Wood&#8217;s day. This historic hotel also offers beautiful dining rooms and a cozy library. There&#8217;s also an indoor porch area where you can enjoy a nice meal while overlooking the surrounding beauty. In addition to dining in the beautiful surroundings of Middlebury, you can relax in style by soaking up the charm of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourterelle is a reincarnation of Roland&#8217;s Place, and opened in 2009. The restaurant offers seasonal French dishes in an elegant setting. Tourterelle serves crepes filled with locally sourced ingredients and cayenne maple syrup, and daily house specials include fresh tagliolini pasta and local fish caught on the nearby Wood Mountain. You can also indulge in coffee, tea, and pastries during your visit to Middlebury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another historic site in Middlebury is the Silk Road Covered Bridge. This bridge, built in 1840, spans the Walloomsac River and is the oldest covered bridge in Bennington County. The structure was once used as a paper mill, and provided hydroelectric power for the mill. Visitors can take a walk along the bridge or walk along the riverbank.
