Read on for some tips and tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old New Castle is a 20-block area filled with historic homes and gardens and quaint restaurants. The town was settled in the early 17th century. It has been on a number of top ten lists of beautiful small towns in the United States. You can explore this historic area and enjoy its laid-back atmosphere while sampling food from a variety of establishments. A visit to New Castle is sure to be a memorable one. Just be sure to bring your camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For something a little more active, take a hike along the Delaware River. There are several trails to explore along this riverfront. The Battery Park trail is 1.5 miles long, separating the marsh from the river. The old railroad ticket office, built in 1832, was moved to Battery Park in the 1950s. Before the Civil War, the railroad was one of the main reasons New Castle grew so quickly. This historic building is said to have a number of exhibits, but I didn&#8217;t get to see it during my visit to New Castle. The Dutch House Museum and Gardens are also historic homes that date back to the 1600s. Another big historic home turned museum is the Read House and Gardens. Both are great for picnics. This is a great place for the whole family to enjoy the Delaware River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s oldest building, the Court House, is a National Historic Landmark and was the colonial capitol of Delaware. Built in 1732, it served as the state&#8217;s first court and the state capitol until 1777. It is open for tours during daylight hours, but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and during state holidays. Groups of ten or more are recommended to reserve a tour.
