The Rocky Mountain Front is the name given to the eastern flank of Montana’s mountainous domain. Beginning in the upper Musselshell River valley near Harlowton, the Front spans 460 miles north. In the south, it stretches 250 miles, following the border with South Dakota and Wyoming. Today, there are still grizzly bears roaming this area, which is part of its natural heritage. Visiting the Front is a truly unique experience.

The most significant threat to this region is fragmentation, caused by the development of large ranches. Low profit margins in agriculture encourage people to sell land to recreational users. In addition, oil and gas development threatens this habitat. Further, this deterioration of the Front’s wildlife habitats is threatening the existence of grizzly bears, which make huge ranges here their home. Dispersing development can also disrupt grizzly bears’ migration and cause human-bear conflict.

The western arm of Montana features numerous high-country lakes that offer scenic views, pristine air, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Visitors to the Rocky Mountains can enjoy a hike on the famous Highline Trail, a signature North American hiking trail. It begins at Logan Pass and winds its way to Granite Park Chalet, following the Continental Divide, and passing alpine landscape scenarios. Whether you’re a hiker or a backpacker, this region has something for you.

In Montana, the “Rockies” are a treasured area. The Rocky Mountains adorn this region, which runs from the Simms area north to the city of Browning and into Canada. In contrast, other parts of Montana are more gradual transitions from mountain to prairie, but the Front’s abrupt transition to a prairie landscaping the southern plain makes it a unique area. Visitors and locals alike value the scenic views and outdoor opportunities this area offers. The Rocky Mountains are also recognized as an important wildlife area, which provides great opportunities for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

The region is also home to a number of native tribes. The Flathead Indians of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, and the Blackfeet Nation live in this region. It’s an extremely culturally rich area and one of the best places to pursue wild outdoor pursuits. You’ll never be bored exploring this vast area in the heart of the mountains. If you want to feel the wild side of the Rocky Mountains, the Eastern Front of Montana will satisfy.

The eastern front of the Rockies is remote, sparsely populated, and incredibly beautiful. This region was the site of a great paleontological mystery. Despite its remote location, scientists found several dinosaur fossils here. Yet, they found no dinosaur nests. But, along the Rocky Mountain Eastern Front, scientists discovered fossilized dinosaur eggs 65 million years ago. It is amazing what can be discovered in this part of the state.

In the eastern part of the region, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is a true epic. It spans 1.5 million acres across 4 National Forests. The eastern half of this area is characterized by numerous “refs” – limestone escarpments that likely formed from ancient coral reefs. The Bob Marshall Chinese Wall and numerous rock faces are among the many geological attractions found here. So, the Bob Marshall Wilderness is an absolute must for anyone traveling to the area.
