Santa Catalina Island is one of the California Channel Islands, located southwest of Los Angeles. It’s known for its wildlife, diving sites, and scenic mountaintop, Mt. Orizaba. The island’s major cities include Two Harbors, a resort town with palm trees and cabanas. You can also visit Avalon, which has an interesting museum, ballroom, and movie theater. In the evenings, head to Avalon’s Catalina Casino and enjoy the evening at the museum, or try a night out at the casino.

In addition to its unique natural setting, Santa Catalina Island is also home to five species of mammals, including three native species and four introduced species. There are over 400 bison on the island, a large population of wild pigs, fourteen species of reptiles, and nearly four hundred native plant species. The rugged coastline is punctuated by pockets of sandy coves. The island is also home to thriving colonies of sea mammals.

In 1846, the Mexican government granted the island to a private citizen. During the next several centuries, the island changed hands several times, including the Wrigley family. In 1919, it was bought by the Wrigley family, who later sold it to a company. The island has changed hands several times during its history, including a mining operation that lasted until the mid-19th century. In 1919, William Wrigley Jr. bought the company from the Banning brothers and a few associates.

Avalon and Two Harbors are the two major population centers of the island. Most residents of the island use golf carts or mini cars to get around, although you can also hire a taxi from Catalina Transportation Services. Bicycles are another popular means of transportation. Currently, there are only two roads on the island that are open to the public. The Stage Road is the only major road into the back country. The island is governed by the Catalina Island Conservancy.

If you’d like to take home a beautiful piece of artwork or a unique gift to celebrate your visit to the island, consider purchasing a Santa Catalina Island souvenir. Xplorer Maps’ Santa Catalina Island wood signs, postcards, and trays all feature exclusive, hand-illustrated art by Chris Robitaille. They’re handmade with recycled materials and are environmentally friendly. There’s no better way to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Santa Catalina than by buying Santa Catalina Island merchandise.

Aside from serving as a stunning backdrop in several movies, Santa Catalina Island is also home to many wildlife species, including the elusive bald eagle. In fact, there are more than 500 films filmed on the island, and the island’s inhabitants date back at least 8,000 years. In the 1930s, the island was home to a herd of American bison. However, despite their popularity, the island’s land and watershed were eventually sold to conservationists. Today, the island has been preserved by the nonprofit Catalina Island Conservancy.

The original owners of the island turned the island into a tourist destination. In the late 1880s, George Shatto planned a town called Avalon as the island’s center, and the town soon grew into a hub for island activity. Subsequent owners have nurtured the idea, adding hotels, golf courses, and new tourist attractions. In addition to the many attractions and activities, the island is home to the world’s oldest saltwater fishing club.
