His son, Philip Knight Wrigley, inherited the Wrigley company. He also gave his daughter, Dorothy Wrigley Offield, majority ownership of the Santa Catalina Island Company. The Wrigley family was a major force in transforming the island into a beautiful vacation destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 35-kilometer-long Santa Catalina Island lies in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its widest point is 13 kilometers (8 miles) away from the mainland. The island has sparsely-vegetated hills, including Mt. Orizaba, which stands at 639 meters above sea level. The island&#8217;s cliffs rise dramatically from the sea. Whether you&#8217;re interested in hiking, water sports, or sustainable tourism, the island has something for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides its thriving population of wildlife, Santa Catalina Island is also home to five native land mammals, including the ornate shrew. The San Diego alligator lizard and the arboreal salamander are also found on the island. The island also has an imposing population of wild pigs and American bison. The island&#8217;s rugged coastline is punctuated with pocket beaches and sandy coves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach Catalina Island, you can take a ferry from any of the four mainland cities. It is also possible to take a helicopter from Long Beach, Newport, or Dana Point. Getting to the island is easy and takes only 15 minutes. The weather is great year-round, and there are numerous recreation opportunities available. So what are you waiting for? Go out and enjoy the scenery! You&#8217;ll be glad you did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a car rental on Catalina Island is not necessary, it can be a nice way to get around. There are taxis and a seasonal trolley that circles the town. You can also hire a golf cart or call a taxi. While there aren&#8217;t many taxis available on Catalina Island, there are a few options to get around the island. If you&#8217;re looking for a more affordable option, try walking or taking a bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a thrill seeker, the Casino is a popular tourist attraction. When completed, it was the tallest building in Los Angeles County. It features a ballroom, movie theater, and the Catalina Island Museum. While it&#8217;s true that it doesn&#8217;t offer gambling, the name refers to the traditional Italian definition of a casino. The Casino also features an 8-foot climbing wall, which opened in the summer of 2011.
