In addition to volunteering with NMVFO, volunteers are also required to take a wilderness first-aid course every year. Spanish Conquistadores carved mysterious crosses into the rock and made their way through the area. The town lies on a plateau at the Continental Divide and the watershed on the eastern side flows into the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.
