The town’s name means “succor” in Spanish, and it is located in the fertile Rio Grande Valley. Socorro was founded in the late 1600s when Spanish colonists moved west from the east. In 1626, the town had its first mission, which was later abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680. For 130 years, the town was dormant, but it was reestablished in 1815.
