Socorro, New Mexico, is a small town in central New Mexico, located approximately an hour south of Albuquerque. The city is located in a landscape dominated by extinct volcanoes and the Rio Grande rift. There are many beautiful sites to explore in the area, including the Cerrillos National Historical Park and the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The population of Socorro is approximately 8,800.

Socorro’s roots date back to the 1600s when Spanish settlers trekked through the area. The first mission was established here around 1626, but the settlers abandoned the mission during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. For 130 years, the town went dormant, until it was resettled in 1815. Tourism then worked to draw tourists to the town by creating a tourist website and managing several Facebook pages.

The city offers many cultural activities, including museums dedicated to native and colonial history. If you love art, there are many galleries and museums to explore in the area. For example, the Hammel Museum, a former brewery, houses collections on beer making and the town’s history. The town’s historical society is well-represented in the Socorro Heritage Museum, which also serves as a town visitor center. Its outdoor art gallery is a great place to see local artwork and enjoy live performances.

July, the busiest month for Socorro, however, is the busiest, and the hotel rates tend to be higher during this time. November is the quietest time of year. In general, Socorro has a low population during this period.
