Here are a few of those reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1667, Indian Chief Sachemus granted John Mecoy 36 acres of land in Harwich Center, and in 1668, the town was home to the first white man, Gershom Hall. The town showed a strong religious diversity from the beginning. Today, residents of The Harwiches include Baptists, Methodists, Reformed Methodists, Wesleyans, and Catholics. Currently, the town is comprised of two parishes, the north and south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town is home to the Brooks Academy Museum and the Harwich Historical Society, both of which are located in 80 Parallel Street. Founded in the mid-1800s, the museum has thousands of artifacts and textiles from the town&#8217;s colorful history. This museum&#8217;s centerpiece exhibit, &#8220;Cranberry Culture,&#8221; celebrates the town&#8217;s heritage as the birthplace of the US cranberry industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors to the town can enjoy many activities, including kayaking on the Herring River. The river is the mouth of the Nantucket Sound and is part of the Bell&#8217;s Neck Conservation Lands. There are miles of backwater river channels and private beaches to explore. There are also kayaking tours available to explore the town&#8217;s beautiful nature. Harwich has been ranked the second-happiest seaside town in America and one of the top 25 main streets in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. A 1.5-hour ride from Boston Logan International Airport, the trail is perfect for jogging, biking, and bird watching. And don&#8217;t forget to take the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which offers scenic views of ponds and beaches. Located in the northern part of the town, Hawksnest State Park is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. You can access this park through Spruce Road and Round Cove Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brooks family contributed to the town&#8217;s identity. By law, the Broadbrooks family was changed to Brooks. On the west end of Main Street, you&#8217;ll find the Brooks Academy Museum, where the Harwich Historical Society holds meetings. You can also visit the Brooks Free Library and the Harwich Park. If you&#8217;re looking for a place to visit and learn more about the local history, Brooks Academy Museum is a must-see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A short distance from Cape Cod, Harwich is a charming town with a thriving tourism industry. Near Dennis and Brewster, this town has four harbors. From water skiing to deep sea fishing, and from fly-fishing to swimming, Harwich has something for everyone. It&#8217;s the perfect destination for the whole family.
